Under the sky of Anykščiai...
People and nature, or rather, unity of both, made Anykščiai famous Anykščiai has been granted status of resort territory because of the beutiful countryside, mineral springs, the present day and would-be spas, ski routes, the growing network of recreation services. Between the two world wars in independent Lithuania Anykščiai was a resort. This fact was one of the incentives to strive to become a resort territory and, finally, a resort. Anykščiai is a tiny bit of land surrounded by crystal-clear lakes, proud of its high mounds, rich cultural heritage and lovely countryside. The town of Anykščiai, situated at the confluence of the Šventoji and Anykšta rivers, is renowned for its literary tradition, veiled by myths and legends. One of them tells that looking down from a high hill at the huge Lake Rubikiai our ancestors would compare it to a palm, while the river that has its source from the lake was likened to a thumb. “Thumbs“ is nykščiai in Lithuanian, hence the name Anykščiai. Another legend has it that a farmer‘s daughter hurt her thumb washing linen at the source of the river and cried: “Oh my thumb, oh my thumb!” Centuries have passed since the name of Anykščiai was mentioned in written documents (1440). People lived here as far back as the 11th century B.C. Twenty mounds are witnesses to Lithuania‘s glory in medieval times. The most impressive one is Voruta Hillfort where a castle of Midaugas, the founder of the state of Lithuania, used to stand. Visitors are attracted by Anykščiai Forest made famous by A.Baranauskas, charming bends of the River Šventoji, gleaming lakes, cottages and farmhouses in picturesque countryside, the abundance of cultural monuments.
